In 2001 I had an idea. I felt like there wasn't much good music on the radio or TV, but I was finding great unsigned artists in the clubs and festivals. I decided I wanted to travel around and find these artists and somehow put them on TV and share it with you. I would call it The Highway Girl and I would feature mainly singer songwriters and Pop Rock bands like myself. I didn't know how I would make it happen without money or a record deal. Cut to the end of 2004 when I discovered podcasting. I sent my music to every podcaster I could find (I believe there were 10 or 15 at the time) and they really embraced it! I started to sell CD's. It got me thinking about all these friends I had who were so talented, but were just sitting in their bedrooms writing and recording. I wanted the world to hear them!
So, March 1, 2005 I started The Highway Girl. I had no idea where it was gonna go. I had no format. I just pushed record and started talking. Two years later I'm still having an absolute blast finding great music and sharing it with you. The fact that you buy our music and support our live shows makes all the work worthwhile.
And here we are in 2008 and thanks to the Internet my dream is fully becoming a reality. The Highway Girl is finally in production as a TV show for the Internet! We were also accepted into the prestigious Techstars program this summer in Boulder, CO. Only 10 out of 400 applicants are accepted. We were mentored by Google, Yahoo, Microsoft...all the top people. We're excited about creating a whole new way for artists and fans to interact. We're gonna let you tell us what you want. And we're going to trust you care enough about the art you love to support it.
In the digital age, we need to throw out all the rules in order to transform the music industry. We know our music's great and we deserve to be paid for it, but we also know DRM sucks and we don't want any part of it. How can we evolve as artists and become more open with what we create? I believe we can do that as we begin to trust that it's you, the people, who will support us not the industry. It is the people who buy our albums (and downloads) that keep us going. It is you, the person who has taken the time to find this great music, who matters most. You are the one who will keep great music alive by deciding who you will support. You have an opportunity to use your voice when you find music you love enough to pay for it. I ask you to support these artists by watching and listening to The Highway Girl every week. I ask you to find the artists you love and purchase the exclusive content we produce on them. We split sales 50/50 with the artist on the net amount. You're making an investment in changing the music industry for the better. I believe you will love the artists on The Highway Girl so much, you'll also want to take them with you in your car and your portable music player. You'll want to have them with you!
Thank you for caring about us. We really do want you to share!
With Love,
Samantha Murphy XO
